Be open to contemplation & introspection. How do “Those People” see you? How do people that think differently respond to you? How have we judged people? Has it helped or hindered your message? Are we pushing others down while we climb up?
The Christian faith is alive only when it is listening, morphing, innovating, letting go of whatever has gotten in the way of Jesus and embracing whatever will help us be more and more the people God wants us to be.”
From my background, Communion is a church service where we hear a message about Jesus giving His own blood & body to a Roman crucifixion to save us. Usually the bible passage is read where Jesus had dinner with His disciples & segued the evening to a time of communion.
Communion to the disciples on that night would have meant something different. They knew it as a time to celebrate being freed from hundreds of years of slavery from Egypt.
What is it that makes us so against being bound in any form of slavery & control?
Quantum Physics & Us
A few hundred years ago, scientists realized that the particles of an atom are made up of smaller particles, which led to discovering even smaller particles that made up the particles of the particles of an atom.
Through observation they were able to see that the whole universe was formed by these very small particles joining other particles creating atoms. Atoms joined atoms to make molecules. Molecules joined each other making nucleotides or DNA. This led to cells forming which joined creating the systems of the human body.
The subatomic particles that make everything up have some very peculiar actions. The can appear out of nowhere and disappear to other dimensions. They can travel one path or all possible paths.
Jesus described spirit like this,
The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the spirit.
Connection & Progress
Built into the very framework of the universe is the desire to connect. In connection, unity & holism is born bringing new possibilities and dimension.
Maybe this is why we feel loneliness deep in our bones. Maybe this explains why racism & slavery are so destructive & the very opposite of what it means to be human.
We want progress but many times it comes at the expense of another.
Created to Live
Jesus said that He came to give us life—the life God intended us to live.
One of His most famous and yet underused sermons is recorded in Matthew chapters 5 through 7. Many know this as “The Sermon On the Mount.”
As was His custom, He said things that seem backwards to us as humans.
Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor;
Happy are those who are humble;
Happy are those who are merciful to others; God will be merciful to them!
Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children!
Slavery & Communion
Hebrew or Jewish communion was a celebration of The Passover—a time when The Lord freed them from the bonds in Egypt.
Slavery is an ugly truth seen in many past generations. In the United States slavery is illegal. But every one of us participate in subtle forms of slavery.
At the foundation of slavery is the idea that for me to progress, you must be pushed down. We see this in corporate America; we participate in it when we purchase a t-shirt for $12 at the expense of an entire family in Bangladesh working for $6 a day.
It’s deeply engrained in our way of life and it holds us in an “us versus them” mentality.
Progress & Judgmentalism
When Jesus gave his sermon in Matthew 5, he taught us a new way to live. He told us we weren’t capable of judging other humans.
The hidden power of this message is seen in light of this topic of slavery and progression.
By following His teaching, we can look at “Those People” and see them the way He sees them. We can be kind, merciful & open to people that live & think differently than we do.
Maybe this is a way for us individually & corporately as Christians to be seen as useful to the world. Jesus said when salt loses its flavor it is useless and will be thrown out and walked upon.
We follow the One that has the answers; He created everything. But our desire to be right, to force our opinions on morality, to tell people we have the only truth—we’ve lost our saltiness.
The Spirit is here to guide us in ways of progress that don’t push one segment down so that another can rise up.
We need to pause. Introspection & contemplation is needed. There has to be Something More!
Peace and wholeness on your journey!
