The way God will make things right is not by hurting the bad guys (retribution), but by turning bad guys into good guys with undeserved love.” — Derek Flood
Almost every major religion, including Christianity has a major emphasis on the afterlife. Many people think life on earth is all about getting to heaven. Jesus didn’t seem to agree. Many Christians make the Gospel & salvation & eternity the main focus—but Jesus always turned it back to our lives here and now.
Death Before Life
Jesus never made the afterlife our focus or heaven our destination. A couple years ago I set out to really focus on the life of Jesus. I heard someone say, “Jesus is perfect theology.” — that did it for me. I ran into some major issues however, as I noticed my neat, tidy, and well thought through doctrines weren’t holding up. I actually became more confused than ever.
I realized I wasn’t reading the Bible properly. I was searching for proofs to my formulas. I wanted exact information to support my views. Once I changed my purpose in reading, a new world opened up to me. Instead of trying to find little details I began to see the bigger picture. I could see the message Jesus was trying to get across, instead of trying to prove my ideas with his words. It’s my personal opinion that my old way of reading was very superficial.
Are we creating hell for humans here on earth or do we bring the kingdom of heaven here with our actions and outlook?
